Iliotibial Band Syndrome Treatment

Treatment for Iliotibial Band syndrome can be as simple as resting. However, this does not always solve the problem and many serious runners do not want to interrupt their training. You’ve tried foam rolling, ice/heat and stretching, but the relief from these is short.

Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome is a common injury in runners and usually presents itself as pain in the hip or knee. The iliotibial band is the ligament that runs down the outside on the leg from the hip to the shin. ITB syndrome occurs when this ligament becomes tight or inflamed. It can be caused by a variety of things such as running in worn out shoes, running in the same direction on a track or just general overuse. ITB syndrome can affect seasoned runners just as likely as it does those new to running.

Dr. Royer has successfully treated several patients suffering from ITB syndrome. He educates patients about the possible cause of IT band syndrome and uses a combination of Graston Technique, Kinesio Taping, stretching and . Dr. Royer will use Graston Technique is an effective treatment for iliotibial band syndrome and uses an instrument assisted myofascial release to break up any scar tissue. He pairs this with Kinesio Taping that applied properly will relieve the inflammation of the ITB and provide some relief for the patient and allow them to continue training. Dr. Royer will then go over stretches and possible exercises to help the patient recover faster. Finally, he will discuss the patients running habits in order to get to the cause of the ITB syndrome. Dr. Royer has had great success in helping runners heal from Iliotibial Band Syndrome using this treatment regimen.
